Vladimir Putin became president exactly twenty-five years’ ago today.
On May 7th, 2000 he stood in the St. Andrew’s Hall of the Great Kremlin Palace – built under Tsar Nicholas I between 1837 and 1849 – and said:

“I understand that I have taken a great responsibility upon myself and I know that in Russia the head of state has always been and will always be a person who answers for everything that happens in the country.”
